Notre Dame & Penn State - Sunday's Closing Bouts (2011 NCAA fencing) ...

Note – CollegeFencing360 plans to tweet every score from Sunday's bouts involving ND and PSU (cf360updates) ... stay-tuned!

The latest installment of the Penn State vs. Notre Dame college fencing rivalry will take center stage on Sunday at Ohio State's French Fieldhouse. Notre Dame holds a tenuous six-point lead on Penn State in the team standings, with each team slated for 54 bouts on Sunday (nine each for the two entrants per team in each weapon).

One wrinkle to the drama is the fact that the Notre Dame foilists are split in separate groups ... in fact, ND freshman Rachel Beck actually is fencing in the same group with PSU teammates Doris Willette and Olga Ostatnigrosh.

Sabre fencers to keep an eye on include the opposing freshmen (ND's Lian Osier and PSU's Nicole Glon), as this is the weapon where the Irish most likely could add to their lead, based on Saturday's standings and Sunday's matchups.

In foil, both teams are led by a senior veteran (PSU's Doris Willette and ND's Hayley Reese met in the 2009 NCAA final) – with Penn State maybe having a slight edge due to sophomore Olga Ostatnigrosh's experience fencing in the 2010 NCAAs.

Notre Dame epeeist Ewa Nelip may be the deciding factor, as the two-time NCAA semifinalist managed only a 6-8 record on Saturday (dropping her to 16th place).

Assuming a hypothetical that all of Sunday's ND-PSU bouts will go to the fencers holding a higher placement after Saturday's bouts, here's how each weapon would play out:

2011 NCAA Fencing Day-3 Team Standings (women's weapons thru 14 bouts)

Here are the full day-3 standings from the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships (at Ohio State's French Fieldhouse). Analysis later (see earlier blog post for men's final weapon standings).

Strength-Factor Hypothetical Women's Seeding (2011 NCAA Fencing)

Contact: Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)

Here's a (hypothetical) look at how the women's entrants in the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships compare, based on their official "Fencing Strength Factor" (sort of an individual RPI) for the 2010-11 college season. In some cases, this listing can provide a relative comparison when looking at how various fencers end up finishing at the NCAAs. Unlike in the NCAA Regionals, there are no actual seeds used for the NCAA Championships.

(Note – There may be quirks in these numbers, such as two-time NCAA runner-up Noam Mills being #9 on this list ... again, these lists simply help for a possible comparative look that is based on the individual fencer results from the college season – dual meets and Regionals).

In the men's competition, the 12 men's foil All-Americans included 10 fencers who were among the top-12 leaders in FSF (eight of the 12 men's epee All-Americans had top-12 FSFs entering the NCAAs, while eight of the men's sabre All-Ameicans also were on pace for such a finish based on their FSFs) ... that all adds up to 28 of the 36 All-Americans parlaying a top-12 FSF "hypothetical seed into a top-12 All-America finish.

... As can be seen below, team leader Notre Dame has the strongest collection of women's competitors – on paper, that is (total of 30 when adding up the six fencers' hypothetical seeds ... followed by Ohio State's 55, St. John's 60, Penn State 62 and Princeton 64 ... Harvard has only five women's entrants, with a total of 53 when adding up their FSF comparative rankings).

NCAA Men's Foil – Midpoint Overview (2011 Fencing)

Contact: Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)

The 2011 NCAA men's foil competition again is on pace to have fencers from Penn State and Notre Dame comprising the four semifinalist/medal-round spots. Following Thursday's first round of bouting, Penn State junior
Miles Chamley-Watson (13-1; +32) sits atop the standings, followed by PSU sophomore David Willette (12-2; +35) and the Notre Dame duo of freshman Ariel DeSmet (12-2; +34) and junior Reggie Bentley (11-3; +26).

One year ago, Willette was the 2011 NCAA runner-up while Chamley-Watson reached the semifinals. Current Notre Dame juniors
Gerek Meinhardt ('10 NCAA champion; '09 runner-up) and Enzo Castellani rounded out the 2010 medal-round foilists ... but Meinhardt was lost this season due to an injury and Castellani was edged by his teammates DeSmet and Bradley for the two ND entrant spots in 2011. In addition to Chamley-Watson and Meinhardt, the other 2009 NCAA men's foil semifinalists were PSU's Nick Chinman (the eventual '09 champ) and Columbia's Kurt Getz.

The men's round-robin concludes on Friday with three rounds (nine bouts) for each fencer. Air Force's
Daniel Cohen (10-4; +21) has the best chance to jump into one of the medal-round spots, followed by two fencers at 9-5: Yale senior Nathanel Botwinick (+13) and Stanford freshman Turner Caldwell (+12).

(Reminder – The NCAA round-robin bouts are being contested at Ohio State's French Fieldhouse, while the medal-rounds bouts will be held in adjoining Saint John Arena. Friday's round-robin has a 9:30 a.m. start time, with the men's semifinals then slated to start at 2:00 p.m., with six bouts simultaneously, followed by the title bouts in the order of sabre, foil and epee).

Air Force's Cohen impressively swept the PSU foilists during Thursday's bouting (5-3 vs. Chamley-Watson; 5-1 vs. Willette), with Chamley-Watson winning the early head-to-head matchip vs. his PSU teammate Willette (5-3). When excluding their head-to-head bout, Chamley-Watson and Willette blitzed the field on Thursday to the tune of a 24-2 combined record and +67 total-points indicator. They allowed 57 touches in their 26 combined bouts versus fencers from other teams (only 2.2 opponent touches per bout).

Chamley-Watson (who sits near the top of the men's foil world rankings) technically entered the 2011 NCAAs with the 9th-best Fencing Strength Factor (for the 2010-11 college season), while Willette was #2 on that hypothetical list, DeSmet  #1, Bentley #4, Daniel Cohen #17, Botwinick #11 and Caldwell #5.

Chamley-Watson and Willette will square off against their Notre Dame rivals on Friday, with other closing bouts against: Yale (Botwinick and current #22 Shiv Kachru), Julian Cardillo (Brandeis; current 10th-place), Drew's James Weiss (17th), OSU's Zain Shaito (11th) and Samuel Hardwicke-Brown (24th), and Detroit's Michael Purdy-Sachs (18th).

DeSmet went 4-1 on Thursday vs. fencers from the top contenders for the NCAA team title, with a sweep of Ohio State (5-2 vs. Shaito; 5-0 Hardwicke-Brown), a 5-1 win over the lone St. John's foil entrant (Eli Schenkel), and a split against Harvard (5-3 vs. Tommaso DeRobilant; 2-5 vs. Lucas Lin). Bentley also was 4-1 in those key bouts for the team standings, losing to Schenkel (1-5) but sweeping the foilists from OSU (5-1 Shaito; 5-3 Hardwicke-Brown) and Harvard (5-1 DiRobilant; 5-2 Lin).

In addition to their showdown bouts with Penn State, the ND foilists also will face the following fencers on Friday: Drew's James Weiss (currently in 17th place), Princeton's Robert Malcolm (21st) and Alex MIlls (9th), UNC's Joseph Alter (23rd), Penn's Vidur Kapur (13th), AFA's Cohen (5th) and Stanford's Caldwell (7th).

Air Force's Cohen – an All-American at Duke in 2009 – lost on Thursday against his former Blue Devils teammate (1-5 vs. Dorian Cohen), with his other losses coming against Caldwell (2-5; rematch of 2011 West Regional fenceoff won by Cohen) and Penn's Kapur (3-5). Cohen will attempt to earn a semifinalist spot on Friday, with the two huge bouts against Notre Dame while also facing: Columbia's Bo Charles (currently 16th) and Alex Pensler (12th), NYU's Phil Jameson (14th), Princeton's Malcolm and Mills, UNC's Alter and Drew's Weiss.

Based on the hypothetical pre-NCAAs comparison of their relative "Fencing Strength Factors," three of the foilists currently in the top-10 entered the competition w/ a comparative FSF "seeding" outside the top-10 (Daniel Cohen had the 17th-best FSF in the field, Botwinick 11th and Cardillo 20th). A couple fencers will be hoping to better match their FSF "seeds" on Friday, as Shaito (11th place) entered with the 3rd-best FSF, while Malcolm (21st) was the hypothetical #15 seed and Kachru (22nd) had the 13th-best FSF.

Hypothetical Strength-Factor Seeding (2011 NCAA Men's Fencing)

Contact: Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)

Here's a (hypothetical) look at how the men's entrants in the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships compare, based on their official "Fencing Strength Factor" (sort of an individual RPI) for the 2010-11 college season. In some cases, this listing can provide a relative comparison when looking at how various fencers end up finishing at the NCAAs. Unlike in the NCAA Regionals, there are no actual seeds used for the NCAA Championships.

(Note – There are some obvious quirks in these numbers, such as Penn State foilist MIles Chamley-Watson being #9 on this list and PSU sabreist Aleksander Ochocki being #12 ... again, these lists simply help for a possible comparative look that is based on the individual fencer results from the college season – dual meets and Regionals).

Thursday's Bouting Schedule/Matchups (NCAA 2011 Fencing Championnships)

Contact: Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)

Here's how the men's fencers will competing on day-1 of the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships. The day opens with four groups of six in each weapon, fencing round-robin (5-touch bouts; 5 bouts each). The remaining rounds are typical dual-meet format, with three fencers competing against three other fencers (nine total bouts in the round, three for each fencer).

Each fencer has 14 bouts on Thursday and nine more on Friday. Each win counts one point to the team total. Thursday' bouting starts at 10:00 a.m., Friday starts at 9:30. All of the bouting will take place at Ohio State's French Fieldhouse – except for the medal rounds, to be held in the adjacent St. John Arena. There will be semifinal, 15-touch bouts in each weapon, following by the 15-touch title bouts. Note that the medal-round results do not count to the team score.

The women follow on Saturday and Sunday, with similar format and timing. The team awards ceremony will follow the women's medal round, on Sunday afternoon.

MEN'S SABRE

NCAA 2011 Fencing Championship Qualifiers

Contact: Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)

Here are the 144 fencers who will be competing in the 2011 NCAA Men's and Women's Combined Fencing Championships (March 24-27; at Ohio State University). Max. two entries per school in each weapon. Men will fence a full round-robin (23 bouts; 5-touch) spanning the first two days, followed by the women on the weekend rounds. Each individual win in the round-robin counts one point to the team score. Top-four in each weapon will advance to individual medal rounds (15-touch bouts; men on Fri., women in Sun.) – with those results not counting to the team score.

Three teams – Notre Dame, Ohio State and Princeton – qualified the maximum 12 fencers (a full breakdown of each team's qualifiers will be posted later today).

Plenty more analysis and historical perspective still to come ... Stay-tuned.

Women's Seeds – 2011 NCAA Fencing Mid-Atlantic/South Regional

Note that this regional seed info. still is subject to change (possible, but unlikely), due to recalculations or withdrawals.

Qualification for the NCAA Championships is based on a formula combination of Fencer Seed Factor/FSF (40%) and Regional finish (60%). The Northeast has six automatic berths to the NCAA Championships in women's foil and women's sabre (seven in women's epee). There is a maximum of two entries per school in each weapon.

First-round pools determine 12 fencers that will combine with the top-12/byes in 2nd-round of pools ... 18 then advance to the 3rd round of pools and the top-12 in the 3rd round will compete in final pool-of-12 (full round-robin).

MA/S men's seeds were posted on previous blog post ... still to come are Midwest women, all of the Northeast and then the Midwest men.

CF360 hopes to be tracking the action all day (via Twitter feed CF360updates and this CF360 blog).

MEN'S FOIL (7 automatic bids to NCAAs)

NCAA Fencing - 2011 West Regional Seedings

An assortment of 57 fencers from the four West Region schools (Stanford, Air Force, UC San Diego and Cal Tech) will be in action at the 2011 NCAA West Regional, on Sat., March 5 at the Air Force Academy's Cadey Gymnasium East Gym.

Saturday's results will count to 60% of the individual qualification for the NCAA Championships, to be held March 24-27 at Ohio State. The other 40% is based on each individual's "fencer seeding factor" (i.e. regular-season dual-meet bouts). The relative strength factors are listed below, shown as seeds 1-2-3, etc. (in some cases, there are significant gaps between certain seeds).

The West Regional format in each weapon will be one pool in each weapon, with each fencer facing the others and placements based on won-loss record

The NCAA Championships again will feature 24 competitors in all six weapons, with each of the four regions receiving a varying number of automatic berths in each weapon. Each school can qualify a maximum of two fencers in each weapon for the NCAA Championship. The West Region's allotment of automatic berths is two in each weapon except men's epee (3). Following the Regional, the West also can submit two candidates in each weapon as "at-large" nominees for the NCAAs (there are two total at-large spots available in each weapon, for the respective 24-fencer fields in each weapon).
