Notre Dame Duals - Full 2011 Results & Notes
The 2011 two-day Notre Dame Duals featured a handful of noteworthy matchups and individual bouts:
• The #1 NOTRE DAME men improved to 18-1, with key wins over Air Force (21-6) and Wayne State (18-9) headlining an 8-0 day for the Irish ... ND nearly swept its sabre bouts vs. Air Force (8-1; with the top-three starters resting), also going 7-2 in foil and 6-3 in epee against the Falcons ... two of the top men's epeeists in college fencing faced off, with ND sophomore James Kaull (10th at '10 NCAAs) edging Air Force three-time NCAA entrant Daniel Trapani (top NCAA finish of 5th, in '09), in a 4-3 bout that closed the round (Trapani earlier posted a 5-2 win over Jacob Osborne and outlasted Brent Kelly, 4-3) ... Kaull opened the round with a 5-3 win over Ben Rinaldi but lost his second bout to Chase Houser (1-5) ... Air Force has another senior competitor with NCAA Tournament experience, but Nicholas Stockdale managed only one win vs. the Irish: 0-5 vs. two-time NCAA semifinalist Enzo Castellani, 1-5 vs. newcomer Ariel DeSmet and 3-2 vs. Grant Hodges ... Air Force's Daniel Cohen had a solid win, besting Reggie Bentley 5-3 ... ND topped Wayne State in 15 of the 18 foil (7) and epee (8) bouts, while the WSU sabreists went 6-3 vs. the ND reserves (All-American Jakub Gibczynski won both of his bouts vs. the Irish).
• The #1 NOTRE DAME women also won all eight of their matches and now are 19-0 and have won 78 consecutive regular-season dual matches (besting the ND record of 75, from '93-'96) ... the ND women picked up key wins in their home tournament vs. #7 Northwestern (18-9), Air Force (21-6) and Wayne State (21-6) ... the latest installment of the ND-Northwestern rivalry saw the Irish hold clear margins in sabre (8-1) and epee (6-3), while the Wildcats won 5-of-9 foil bouts ... Northwestern's only sabre win came in Chloe Grainger's opening bout vs. Lian Osier (ND All-Americans Sarah Borrman and Eileen Hassett were 3-0 vs. a Wildcats unit that was fencing without 2010 NCAA entrant Alicia Guerrieri, out for the season due to injury) ... Northwestern's top foilist Dayana Sarkisova (2010 NCAA semifinalist) posted wins over ND's Grace Hartman (5-0) and vs. her cousin Rada Sarkisova (5-3), but ND two-time All-American Hayley Reese ('09 NCAA runner-up) picked up a key 5-2 win over Sarkisova ... two-time NCAA entrant Devynn Patterson delivered the 5-4 margin, thanks to her sweep of the Irish foilists: 5-4 vs. Reese, 5-3 vs. Rachel Beck and 4-2 vs. 2010 NCAA participant Darsie Malynn ... Northwestern's epee unit – now operating with the departed twin All-Americans Kayley and Christa French – was no match for an ND squad led by two-time NCAA semifinalists Ewa Nelip and Courtney Hurley (both went 3-0) ... later in the day, ND swept the Air Force foilists to go with 6-3 margins in epee and sabre ... Hurley and Nelip both posted 5-1 win over AFA two-time NCAA entrant Simone Barrette (who had her own win, vs. Phenix Messersmith) ... 2010 NCAA entrant Heather Nelson swept her three bouts, vs. ND reserves ... the Irish easily won all three weapons vs. Wayne State (6-3 foil, 7-2 epee, 8-1 sabre) ... WSU All-America foilist Olivia Dobbs went 1-2 against ND (3-4 vs. Reese; 2-5 vs. Sarkisova).
• In other matchups and bouts of note ... the Air Force men posted a 21-6 win over Wayne State (8-1 foil, 9-0 epee, 4-5 sabre) ... Gibczynski had two of the WSU wins but dropped a 4-5 bout against AFA sabreist Scott Pippin ... Stockdale was 2-1 in his foil bouts vs. WSU (2-5 loss vs. Raffi Nersessian) ... in Northwestern's 22-5 win over Wayne State (5-4 foil, 8-1 epee, 9-0 sabre), Sarkisova won both of her bouts – including a 4-3 battle with Dobbs to close the round (Dobbs also lost to Patterson, 2-5, but won 5-4 vs. Camille Provencal) ... the Northwestern women's 7-1 showing at the Notre Dame Duals also included a 20-7 win over Air Force (foil 9-0, epee 6-4, sabre 5-4) ... Barrette was 2-1 vs. the Northwestern epeeists: 5-1 vs. Kara Collins, 5-3 Dina Bazarbayeva, 4-5 Kate Cavanaugh, while Nelson swept her sabre bouts vs. the Wildcats ... the closest match of the weekend between the top teams saw the Air Force women edge Wayne State, 15-12 (foil 1-8, epee 9-0, sabre 4-5) ... Diana Hock notched a noteworthy 4-3 win over Dobbs, for AFA's only foil victory in the match ... Nelson's weep of her three bouts led the Falcons sabreists vs. WSU.
