Notre Dame Duals - Full 2011 Results & Notes

The 2011 two-day Notre Dame Duals featured a handful of noteworthy matchups and individual bouts:

• The #1 NOTRE DAME men improved to 18-1, with key wins over Air Force (21-6) and Wayne State (18-9) headlining an 8-0 day for the Irish ... ND nearly swept its sabre bouts vs. Air Force (8-1; with the top-three starters resting), also going 7-2 in foil and 6-3 in epee against the Falcons ... two of the top men's epeeists in college fencing faced off, with ND sophomore James Kaull (10th at '10 NCAAs) edging Air Force three-time NCAA entrant Daniel Trapani (top NCAA finish of 5th, in '09), in a 4-3 bout that closed the round (Trapani earlier posted a 5-2 win over Jacob Osborne and outlasted Brent Kelly, 4-3) ... Kaull opened the round with a 5-3 win over Ben Rinaldi but lost his second bout to Chase Houser (1-5) ... Air Force has another senior competitor with NCAA Tournament experience, but Nicholas Stockdale managed only one win vs. the Irish: 0-5 vs. two-time NCAA semifinalist Enzo Castellani, 1-5 vs. newcomer Ariel DeSmet and 3-2 vs. Grant Hodges ... Air Force's Daniel Cohen had a solid win, besting Reggie Bentley 5-3 ... ND topped Wayne State in 15 of the 18 foil (7) and epee (8) bouts, while the WSU sabreists went 6-3 vs. the ND reserves (All-American Jakub Gibczynski won both of his bouts vs. the Irish).

• The #1 NOTRE DAME women also won all eight of their matches and now are 19-0 and have won 78 consecutive regular-season dual matches (besting the ND record of 75, from '93-'96) ... the ND women picked up key wins in their home tournament vs. #7 Northwestern (18-9), Air Force (21-6) and Wayne State (21-6) ... the latest installment of the ND-Northwestern rivalry saw the Irish hold clear margins in sabre (8-1) and epee (6-3), while the Wildcats won 5-of-9 foil bouts ... Northwestern's only sabre win came in Chloe Grainger's opening bout vs. Lian Osier (ND All-Americans Sarah Borrman and Eileen Hassett were 3-0 vs. a Wildcats unit that was fencing without 2010 NCAA entrant Alicia Guerrieri, out for the season due to injury) ... Northwestern's top foilist Dayana Sarkisova (2010 NCAA semifinalist) posted wins over ND's Grace Hartman (5-0) and vs. her cousin Rada Sarkisova (5-3), but ND two-time All-American Hayley Reese ('09 NCAA runner-up) picked up a key 5-2 win over Sarkisova ... two-time NCAA entrant Devynn Patterson delivered the 5-4 margin, thanks to her sweep of the Irish foilists: 5-4 vs. Reese, 5-3 vs. Rachel Beck and 4-2 vs. 2010 NCAA participant Darsie Malynn ... Northwestern's epee unit – now operating with the departed twin All-Americans Kayley and Christa French – was no match for an ND squad led by two-time NCAA semifinalists Ewa Nelip and Courtney Hurley (both went 3-0) ... later in the day, ND swept the Air Force foilists to go with 6-3 margins in epee and sabre ... Hurley and Nelip both posted 5-1 win over AFA two-time NCAA entrant Simone Barrette (who had her own win, vs. Phenix Messersmith) ... 2010 NCAA entrant Heather Nelson swept her three bouts, vs. ND reserves ... the Irish easily won all three weapons vs. Wayne State (6-3 foil, 7-2 epee, 8-1 sabre) ... WSU All-America foilist Olivia Dobbs went 1-2 against ND (3-4 vs. Reese; 2-5 vs. Sarkisova).

• In other matchups and bouts of note ... the Air Force men posted a 21-6 win over Wayne State (8-1 foil, 9-0 epee, 4-5 sabre) ... Gibczynski had two of the WSU wins but dropped a 4-5 bout against AFA sabreist Scott Pippin ... Stockdale was 2-1 in his foil bouts vs. WSU (2-5 loss vs. Raffi Nersessian) ... in Northwestern's 22-5 win over Wayne State (5-4 foil, 8-1 epee, 9-0 sabre), Sarkisova won both of her bouts – including a 4-3 battle with Dobbs to close the round (Dobbs also lost to Patterson, 2-5, but won 5-4 vs. Camille Provencal) ... the Northwestern women's 7-1 showing at the Notre Dame Duals also included a 20-7 win over Air Force (foil 9-0, epee 6-4, sabre 5-4) ... Barrette was 2-1 vs. the Northwestern epeeists: 5-1 vs. Kara Collins, 5-3 Dina Bazarbayeva, 4-5 Kate Cavanaugh, while Nelson swept her sabre bouts vs. the Wildcats ... the closest match of the weekend between the top teams saw the Air Force women edge Wayne State, 15-12 (foil 1-8, epee 9-0, sabre 4-5) ... Diana Hock notched a noteworthy 4-3 win over Dobbs, for AFA's only foil victory in the match ... Nelson's weep of her three bouts led the Falcons sabreists vs. WSU.

Notre Dame Duals - 2011 Bouting Schedules

Bouting schedules for the Notre Dame Duals follow below (note that CF360 has requested schedules for other events this weekend and will pass them along if/when provided).

In addition to the host team Notre Dame (#1 men, #1 women), other top teams to watch at the ND Duals include the #7 Northwestern women, plus the men's and women's teams from Air Force and Wayne State. Northwestern's current roster includes three fencers who competed in the 2010 NCAAs (foilists Dayana Sarkisova and Devynn Pattterson; sabreist Alicia Guerrieri), while Air Force's current team includes four who were 2010 NCAA entrants: men's epeeist Daniel Trapani, men's foilist Nick Stockdale, women's epeeist Simone Barrette and women's sabreist Heather Nelson. Wayne State men's sabrest Jakub Gibczynski and women's foilist Olivia Dobbs likewise are past NCAA entrants.

The top-ranked Irish are led by numerous All-Americans (many of who may fence sparingly this weekend). Top ND fencers to watch include: 2008 women's sabre NCAA champion Sarah Borrmann; three-time women's sabre All-American Eileen Hassett; a pair of women's epeeists (Ewa Nelip and Courtney Hurley) who each have reached the NCAA semifinals twice in their careers; three-time men's sabre All-American Barron Nydam and two-time All-American Avery Zuck ('10 semifinalist); two-time women's foil All-American Hayley Reese ('09 NCAA runner-up) and 2010 NCAA entrant Darsie Malynn; 2010 men's epee All-Ameicans James Kaull and Greg Schoolcraft; and three active men's foilists who have earned past All-America honors: Enzo Castellani (two-time NCAA semifinalist), Steve Kubik and Zach Schirtz (2010 NCAA champion & '09 runner-up Gerek Meindhardt is out for the college season, following recent knee surgery).

Philadelphia Invitational - Saturday Results & Analysis (2011)

University of Pennsylvania freshman men's epeeist Clifford Fishler ranked as the fencer of the day during Saturday's action at the Philadephia Invitational, which featured eight men's varsity teams in action at Penn's Hutchinson Gymnasium. The tournament will conclude on Sunday at Temple's McGonigle Hall, with a variety of women's teams set to compete.

Fishler (Great Neck, N.Y.) led the way for the 7th-ranked Quakers, not only in quantity of wins (11-2 record) but in the quality of victories – as the newcomer swept his three bouts versus 9th-ranked Duke and also went 3-0 vs. another quality opponent, North Carolina. Penn finished 6-0 on Saturday, highlighted by the wins over Duke (15-12) and UNC (19-8), along with 18-9 finals vs. Haverford and Sacred Heart, plus 22-5 victories against Drew and NJIT.

The Penn bouts vs. Duke and UNC were the most noteworthy matchups of the day, as Duke did not fence against its rival UNC during the six rounds of action.

Saturday's eight-team competition featured 12 fencers (four from Penn, four Duke, threee UNC and one Sacred Heart) who have competed in the NCAA Championships during previous seasons. Top veterans from Penn include the junior foil trio of Vidur Kapur (15th at '09 NCAAs; 8th in '10), fellow All-American Alex Simmons (7th in '10; appears he did not fence on Sat.) and Zane Grodman (17th in '09), plus sophomore sabreist Evan Prochniak (1th in '10) and senior epeeist Jacob Wischnia (17th in '10). Duke's veterans of the NCAAs include: senior foilist Dorian Cohen (6th at '08 NCAAs; 21st/injured in '10), the junior epee duo of Tristan Jones (23rd in '10) and Jonathan Parker (20th in '09), and sophomore sabreist Anthony Lin (22nd in '10).

The three North Carolina fencers with NCAA Tournament experience include senior sabreist Kevin Zeichmann (24th in '08; 23rd in '10), senior epeeist Eric Hsieh (21st in '10) and junior foilist Kevin Nadeau (22nd in '10). Sacred Heart actually has two men's fencers on its roster – juniors Justin Dion (13th in epee) and Marty Williams (18th in sabre) – who competed in the 2010 NCAAs, but it appears that Williams was not involved in Saturday's bouting (Dion had an impressive showing against the top teams; see below). Haverford sophomore foilist Ben Van Son (21st at '10 NCAAs) also does not appear to have fenced today at Penn.

Penn's tight victory in the top-10 matchup vs. Duke saw the Quakers claim 5-4 margins in all three weapons. Cohen pulled off an impressive sweep of the Penn foilists (5-0 vs. Kapur; 5-3 vs. Grodman and Royce Shipp), but Cohen's foil teammates Matt Budofsky and Andrew Hsu won only one of their six comined bouts in the big match (Kapur and Grodman both were 2-1 vs. Duke). Fishler's sweep led the epeeists vs. Duke (5-0 vs. Jones; 5-3 vs. Dylan Nollner; 5-2 vs. Parker in 9th/final bout), with Wischnia adding his own key win over Jones (3-2; Wischnia also beat Nollner 5-4, but lost 3-2 vs Parker). Prochniak and freshman Michael Mills both went 2-1 in the sabre battle against Duke, with each securing clutch 5-4 wins over Lin (Prochniak did so in the 9th bout).

Duke's top performers in the marquee match versus Penn included Cohen (3-0), Parker (2-1; beat Wischnia) and sabreist Nick Carothers, who edged Mills in an early bout and then had an impressive 5-2 win over Prochniak (his only loss in a 9-1 day). Kapur finished the tournament with an 8-2 mark, joining Fishler and Prochniak as Penn's leaders throughout the day.

Fishler's sweep of UNC – 5-2 vs. Hsieh, 5-4 vs. Jarrett Rodriguez, 5-1 vs. Max Tice-Lewis – paced a 7-2 margin for the Quakers epeeists, while the foil and sabre squads kicked in six wins each to produce the comfortable final margin. Other noteworthy head-to-head results in the Penn-UNC matchup included: Kapur's 5-2 win over Nadeau (who beat Grodman, 4-2); Hsieh topping Wischnia (5-3); and Zimmerman's 5-3 victory over Mills (Zimmerman did not face Prochniak). Penn's Joe Isaac added a solid win over Hsieh, in a 1-0 ultra-defensive battle. It appears that Thomas Le Guillou – a Paris native had some impressive results after joining the UNC program in the 2010 season – is not an active member of the Tar Heels program this year.

Sacred Heart's Dion fashioned a 7-2 record on Saturday versus epeeists from the top three teams – including sweeps of both Penn (5-2 vs. Fishler, Wischnia and Steve Jow) and UNC (5-0 vs. Hsieh; 5-3 vs. Tice-Lewis; 5-1 vs. reserve Daniel Giles). The Duke epeeists managed to get the best of Dion, who beat Parker (5-1) but lost to Jones (4-5) and Nollner (3-5).

Weekend Fencing Team Matchups Schedule (Jan. 22-23, 2011)

The first big fencing weekend of the 2010-11 season is upon us, with four tournaments set for Saturday (Jan. 22) – the NYU Invitational, Philadelphia Invitational (men's bouts, at Penn), the NEIFC Duals #2 and the Army Invitational – followed by Sunday action at the St. John's Super Cup and the second day of the Philadelphia Invitational (women's bouts, at Temple).

CollegeFencing360 has compiled bouting schedules for these tournaments (yet to receive Army Invitational; will add later if available) and they are listed below.

The tournament at NYU and St. John's will feature some of the nation's elite teams – including Notre Dame (#1 in both USFCA men's fencing poll and the women's poll), St. John's (#3/#5), Columbia (#8/#6) and Ohio State (#5/#10), all of which will be competing in both events. Harvard (#2/#3) and Penn State (#4/#2) will be competing at SJU, in a blockbuster event that will be bring together six men's teams that are ranked in the top-8 (#1 thru #5, plus #8), plus six of the top-10 women's squads (#1, #2, #3, #5, #6 and #10).

The two-day tournament in the Philadelphia are is headlined by the University of Pennsylvania's fencing teams (#7 men; #8 women), along with the #7 Northwestern women (who also will compete at NYU), the #8 Duke men and the #9 Temple women.
