Ivy League Round-Robin Results (part-1; Feb. 21)

By Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)

ITHACA, N.Y. (2/21/10) – The Princeton fencing teams (both ranked 4th nationally) went 3-0 in Sunday's first round of Ivy League round-robin dual meets, held at Cornell's Newman Arena, with the championship set to conclude next week at the University of Pennsylvania (Feb. 28).

The Princeton men picked up a key victory over in-state rival and #7 Penn (18-9), adding a 17-10 victory over Brown and a thrilling 14-13 comeback vs. Yale. The Tigers men will face #6 Harvard (1-1) and #8 Columbia (0-2) next week, with Princeton needing only a win over the Crimson to clinch the Ivy League title (Penn is 1-2, Yale 2-2 and Brown 1-1).

The Princeton women (18-8 win vs. #7 Penn; 17-10 vs. Yale and Brown) are tied with #5 Columbia atop the women's standings, with their meeting next weekend likely to decide the title. The Penn women (3-1) still could surge to the title next weekend, with their own key matchup versus Columbia still to be contested. Harvard (2-1) also remains in the running for the Ivy League women's title – as the Crimson could make a move next weekend in their matches vs. Princeton and Columbia.

Freshman women's foilist Brianna Martin led all Princeton fencers with an 8-0 record, while junior men's epeeist Graham Wicas (3rd at '08 NCAAs; 2nd in '09) went 7-1 along with a forfeited victory (due to a black-card violation by Penn's Jacob Wischnia). Three different Princeton weapon units – men's epee, women's epee and women's foil – turned in dominating 22-5 records, with other top fencers from those weapons including: sophomore men's epeeist Mike Elfassy (5-2), freshman men's epeeist Jonathan Yergler (5-1), sophomore women's foilist Lucile Jarry (6-1) and the talented young women's epee trio comprised of sophomore All-American Susannah Scanlan (7-2) along with freshmen Phoebe Caldwell (8-1) and Hannah Safford (7-2).

The Columbia women (21-6 vs. Cornell and Yale; 23-4 vs. Brown) were paced by the event's two most dominant weapon groups (men or women) – as the Lions women's sabreists went 24-3 and the epeeists 23-4. Columbia's top two women's foilists, senior three-time All-American Nicole Ross (8-1) and freshman D'Meca Homer (7-2), combined to go 15-3 while three of their teammates were unbeaten: the two-time All-America sabre duo of junior Jackie Jacobson (7-0) and senior Daria Schneider (6-0), and sophomore All-America epeeist Neely Branfield-Harvey (9-0). Freshman epeeist  Lydia Kopecky (8-1) and sophomore sabreist Sammy Roberts (6-1) each lost only one bout spanning the three matches.

The Penn women will be in contention when action moves to their home facility Hutchinson Gym next week – thanks to a balanced performance from the Quaker weapon units (20 wins in foil and sabre, 18 in epee). Sophomore All-American Domica Franciszkowicz won 10 of her 12 sabre bouts, while three other Penn women – sophomore foilist Laura Paragano, freshman epeeist Amrit Bhinder and junior All-America sabreist Danielle Kamis – chipped in with 8-4 records.

Note – Two All-America fencers did not compete in today's Ivy League event, as Columbia senior men's foilist Kurt Getz was returning from a World Cup event in Venice, Italy, while Penn senior men's sabreist Andrew Bielen was sidelined due to injury.

Notre Dame Teams Move Atop 2010 USFCA College Fencing Poll (#2; Feb. 18)

RELEASE: Feb. 18, 2010             CONTACT: Pete LaFleur (editor@collegefencing360.com)
Notre Dame Teams Back on Top of USFCA College Fencing Poll

Note – see the RANKINGS tab for the USFCA poll archive.

The undefeated Notre Dame fencing teams have returned to the top spots in the respective men's and women's national rankings, as announced by the U.S. Fencing Coaches Association and CF360 (full polls listed below).

The Notre Dame men – who wrapped up the 2010 regular season with a 33-0 record in dual meets (24-0 vs. varsity squads) – racked up 11 wins over teams ranked in the first 2010 USFCA top-10 poll: #1 Penn State, #3 Ohio State (twice), #4 Princeton, #5 Columbia (2), #7 Harvard, #8 St. John's (2), #9 Yale and #10 Duke. The ND women (35-0; 27-0 vs. varsity teams) similarly had an impressive run of wins over top-10 teams, with 13 victories over teams currently or previously ranked among the top-10 (numbers are previous ranking, unless note): #1 Penn State, #3 Harvard, #4 Columbia (2), #5 Northwestern (2), #6 Ohio State (2), #7 Temple, #9 Princeton and #10 Yale – plus two wins over current #6 St. John's.

The Penn State men and women each dropped a spot to #2 in the poll, while the Ohio State men remained #3 and the Princeton men #4. Princeton joins ND and PSU as the only schools with both its men and women ranked in the top-5 (the Tiger women have surged from 9th to 4th in the latest rankings).

The St. John's men climbed three spots (8th to 5th) and the Harvard men bumped up a spot to 6th, with fellow Ivy League teams Pennsylvania (6th to 7th) and Columbia (5th to 8th) dropping down in the poll. Duke inched up from 10th to 9th while Air Force – led by the All-America epee due of senior
Peter French and junior Daniel Trapani – has entered the top-10 in the 10th spot (previous #9 Yale dropped out of the men's poll).

In addition to Princeton, two other women's teams made noteworthy jumps in the poll – as Northwestern now sits in the #3 spot while the previously-unranked St. John's women now are slotted 6th. The Harvard women (#3 to #9) took the biggest tumble in the poll, with one-spot drops by Columbia-Barnard (now 5th), Ohio State (7th) and Temple (8th), along with the Penn women slipping from 8th to 10th and the  #10 Yale women falling out of the poll.

Noteworthy results (other than the key ND wins noted above) that may have affected movement in the polls are as follows:

• St. John's men def. Ohio State, Columbia (twice) and Harvard
• Harvard men def. Ohio State and Columbia
• Duke men def. Penn State
• Air Force men def. Duke
• Northwestern women def. Columbia
• Ohio State women def. Harvard and Northwestern
• St. John's women def. Penn State, Harvard, Columbia and Ohio State (twice)
• Columbia women def. Penn State and Harvard
• Princeton women def. Northwestern, Ohio State and Temple
• Brandeis women def. Penn
• UC San Diego women def. Temple

Princeton's ascent into top-5 status has been led by All-Americans such as junior men's epeeist
Graham Wicas ('09 NCAA runner-up), sophomore men's foilist Alex Mills and sophomore women's epeeist Susannah Scanlan. The Tigers also have received a boost from senior men's sabreist Thomas Abend and the sophomore women's foil duo of Andrea Oliva ('09 NCAA entrant) and Rocky Rothenberg, along with clutch performances from freshman newcomers Jonathan Yergler (men's epee), Eliza Stone (women's sabre) and Hannah Safford (women's epee).

The St. John's women have entered the national top-10 thanks to strong showings by senior All-Americans
Dagmara Wozniak (sabre) and Tanya Novakovska (epee), while reloading its roster with several European imports – most notably foilist Evgeniya Kirpicheva (Ufa, Russia) and epeeist Sanne Gans (Karlskrona, Sweden).
