best because I was born there.

could never do that

College Major: Sports Management (RPTM Program)

Favorite College Class: Womans Studies, I was the only “Straight guy in

class”

Why did you choose your college? Recruited, Best academics, beautiful campus

What do you most like about being a student-athlete at your school? The helpful

staff at the Morgan Center, free tutoring, and love free Nike stuff. Not to

mention, women like it.

What would be your dream job? Continuing training for the Olympics and getting paid, or being the person who tests out the new Nike shoes.

FENCING BACKGROUND

How did you get started in fencing?

Tried it for fun, during my P.E classbecause I was in trouble.

Do you have current family members/ancestors who have been fencers?

Nope,only one.

Do you have any family ancestry from a traditional fencing country? (provide

specifics) Nope

Relatives who have competed in college or pro sports, other than fencing?

Mom, used to be a track runner, Dad, did an iron man. Little sister is an amazing swimmer who is only 13, and older sister played volleyball in high school.

Who are you current coaches?

Simon Gershon, Fencers Club and Gia Abishidze, PennState.

Who are your former coaches?

Simon Gershon, Irene Gershon Fencers Club and Gia Abishidze, PennState.

Who have been the key influences on your fencing career?

Simon Gershon my coach because he has always believed in me.

What are three words that best describe your college head coach and/ or weapon

coach? Simon Gershon (Simply a genius) Gia Abishidze ( A character)

YOUR ATHLETIC CAREER

Do you have any pre-bout rituals or superstitions? Take a bath, and watch a

movie.

Areas where you feel you have improved most this season: Taking it every

competition at a time. Having fun with it.

What are key areas of improvement remain for you? Trying not to get too down

on myself.

How would you describe this college season (for you and your team)?

For me almost perfect, winning this would be the cherry on top. I have won almost

everything in fencing expect for an individual NCAA title.

Of the fencers listed above, who are you closest to?

Gerek Meinhardt has become one of my best friends in not only fencing but

my life. We have been rooming together since early teens.

From the fencers in the 2013 NCAAs, are there any you have fenced a high number

of times?

Gerek Meinhardt and I fence all the time, I would say we are dead even.

Who is your favorite international/national-team fencer?

Honestly, Iconsider myself my favorite. But I do enjoy watching Choi from Korea who I

just beat at the last grand prix.

Have you ever fenced other weapons on a competitive level?

I fenced epee and sabre for fun at the Penn State Garret Open and finished

2nd in both.

What do you like most about college fencing?

The intensity and team atmosphere.

What would you change about college fencing?

The NCAA system

Did you play other sports at a high level (during high school)?

I played basketball and soccer competitively.

If you were to play another sport on the collegiate level, what would it be?

I would say soccer and basketball

How long would you like to continue fencing on a competitive level?

Until I am no longer the best

What is your favorite college fencing roadtrip and why?

Roadtrips suck but, if I had to pick the meet in New York at St, Johns

because it is the most intense competition.

Favorite cities where you have fenced at an event (and why)?

Korea, because not only have I done well there but I love the people and

food

Favorite/most memorable fencing moment (and why)?

When I came back from 14-7 at the Senior World Championships in Paris

and won with 55 seconds left.

Most embarrassing moment on the fencing strip?

I actually do not think I have one. Losing!

Strangest/rarest thing ever seen in a fencing match your college team was

competing in?

Someone threw up 4x during one match

Favorite pro sports teams/athletes?

I like the Miami Heat. I like the Steelers because my boy Derek Moye plays

for them, and Raiders because my boy Jack Crawford plays for them.

Favorite Food?

Sushi

Favorite TV Show and/or Movie; Actor and/or Actress?

Suits, Breaking Bad, Wild n’ Out, Four Brothers, The Warrior, A man from

Nowhere Friday Night Lights.

was 6 years old.

My sister Doris Willette recently retired. She also fenced foil and went to the

I have fenced many of the competitors many times throughout my

competitive career.

Who is your favorite international/national-team fencer (and why)?: Byungchul

Choi from Korea, because of his speed skill and success, while being a very

short fencer. He is the same height as me.

Have you ever fenced other weapons on a competitive level (include brief details):

What do you like most about college fencing?: I love being part of a team, it

brings a whole new attitude and experience to the sport.

What would you change about college fencing?: I think that NCAA fencing needs

to more closely simulate international fencing in terms of refereeing,

formality and replay equipment.

Did you play other sports at a high level (during high school)?:

If you were to play another sport on the collegiate level, what would it be?:

How long would you like to continue fencing on a competitive level?:

I will most likely not be fencing after the 2016 Olympic Games, and possibly

not after my time at Penn State is finished.

What do you like most about college fencing? – The team aspect.

What would you change about college fencing? – The format of NCAAs is inconsistent with the rest of the season and makes no sense. I would change it to a 45 touch 3v3 relay.

If you were to play another sport on the collegiate level, what would it be? – Soccer
